Jana Hecktor

Jana Hecktor

Jana Hecktor is a media scholar and researcher at the International Center for Ethics in the Sciences (IZEW) at the University of Tübingen. Her research addresses the socio‑technical and ethical dimensions of digital media and AI systems from a media‑theoretical and interdisciplinary perspective.

A central focus of her research lies in games studies. She examines videogames as operational and epistemic media, investigating how play, interfaces, and procedural systems produce knowledge and shape ethical relations. Her research on games includes AI‑supported NPC and character design, generative models in game development, and ethical guidelines for the use of AI in videogames. Her work connects Games Studies with media theory and applied ethics and has been presented at international conferences.

Selected publication:
Hecktor, J. & Krampe, T. (2025). Towards ethical guidelines for videogame character creation with GenAI. In: DiGRA 2025.
